Saifedean Ammous

Economist and author of The Bitcoin Standard and The Fiat Standard, known for applying Austrian economics to analyze Bitcoin and fiat monetary systems.

Saifedean Ammous is a Lebanese-Palestinian economist and author best known for The Bitcoin Standard (2018) and The Fiat Standard (2021), two of the most influential books in the Bitcoin intellectual canon. His work applies Austrian economics to analyze monetary systems, making the case that Bitcoin represents sound money for the digital age.

Background

Ammous holds a PhD in Sustainable Development from Columbia University. He taught economics at the Lebanese American University and later at the Universidad del CEMA in Buenos Aires. His academic background in economics, combined with an interest in the Austrian School tradition of Ludwig von Mises and Friedrich Hayek, positioned him to produce what would become one of Bitcoin's defining intellectual works.

The Bitcoin Standard

The Bitcoin Standard analyzes Bitcoin through the lens of monetary history, examining the properties that made gold the dominant monetary standard and arguing that Bitcoin possesses these properties in a superior digital form. The book introduced concepts like stock-to-flow ratio to a broad Bitcoin audience and became the most recommended introduction to Bitcoin's economic significance. It has been translated into over 30 languages and has sold hundreds of thousands of copies worldwide.

The Fiat Standard

The Fiat Standard turns the same analytical framework on the current monetary system, arguing that fiat money is a technology with specific -- and mostly negative -- properties. The book introduced the concept of "fiat mining" to describe how actors in a fiat system profit by positioning themselves to receive newly created money. It extends the Austrian economic critique across food, energy, science, and family structure.

The Saifedean.com Platform

Ammous runs an online educational platform at saifedean.com offering courses on Austrian economics, Bitcoin, and monetary theory. The platform includes a subscription-based economics seminar where participants discuss monetary theory and the economics of Bitcoin.

Significance

Ammous is arguably the most important economic thinker in the Bitcoin space. The Bitcoin Standard has become the definitive mainstream introduction to Bitcoin's economic case. His analytical framework -- grounding Bitcoin in monetary history and Austrian economics rather than technology hype -- gave Bitcoin intellectual credibility with audiences who might have dismissed it as a speculative fad. The book is widely cited as the single most influential text in converting skeptics to understanding Bitcoin's monetary properties.

His work is frequently discussed alongside Lyn Alden's Broken Money as complementary perspectives on Bitcoin's monetary case -- Ammous from Austrian economics, Alden from engineering and empirical analysis.
