How It Works

Leaving a review on MappingBitcoin is simple and decentralized.

1. Log in with Nostr

Use a browser extension (Alby, nos2x, Nostr WoT), paste your private key (nsec), or connect via a Nostr bunker (NIP-46).

2. Find a Venue

Search the map or browse the directory to find a Bitcoin-accepting merchant you have visited.

3. Rate & Review

Select 1-5 stars, optionally add text (up to 2,000 characters) and up to 5 photos.

4. Publish

Your review is signed with your Nostr key and published to relays. It belongs to you and is censorship-resistant.

Reviews are weighted by the author's position in the Web of Trust. The closer you are to trusted community members, the more influence your review carries.

Ratings aren't just averaged -- they're trust-weighted. This prevents spam and fake reviews from distorting venue scores.

Do I need a Nostr account to leave a review?▼
Yes. Reviews are signed with your Nostr key. You can create an identity using a browser extension like Alby, nos2x, or Nostr WoT, or generate keys using any Nostr client.
Can I edit or delete my review?▼
Nostr events are immutable. However, MappingBitcoin uses replaceable events (same d-tag per venue), so submitting a new review for the same venue will replace your previous one.
Why does my review have low trust?▼
Trust is based on your position in the Nostr social graph. To increase trust, build your Nostr presence, follow and interact with active community members, and engage with the Bitcoin/Nostr ecosystem.
Can I add photos to my review?▼
Yes. You can attach up to 5 images per review. Photos are stored on Blossom, a decentralized storage network, so they cannot be censored or removed by any single party.
How are ratings calculated?▼
Ratings are trust-weighted averages. Reviews from accounts closer to trusted community seeders have more influence on the aggregate score. This provides Sybil-resistant ratings without centralized moderation.
Can merchants respond to reviews?▼
Yes. Verified venue owners can reply to reviews on their listing. Look for the 'Owner' badge on replies.
