Bitcoin Pichilemu

Community building Chile's first Bitcoin circular economy in Pichilemu, the country's surf capital, blending Bitcoin merchant adoption with surf culture.

Bitcoin Pichilemu is a community building Chile's first Bitcoin circular economy in Pichilemu, the country's recognized surf capital on the central coast. The project blends Bitcoin adoption with the town's vibrant surf culture, creating a unique model where Bitcoin, waves, and community converge.

Overview

Pichilemu is a small coastal town in Chile's O'Higgins Region known internationally for its world-class waves, particularly at Punta de Lobos. Bitcoin Pichilemu leverages the town's appeal to surfers, digital nomads, and tourists to build a network of merchants and businesses that accept Bitcoin via the Lightning Network.

Key figures behind the initiative include Nicolas Leon, a civil engineer and surfboard shaper who bridges the surf and Bitcoin worlds, and Miguel Klagges, co-founder of ONG Bitcoin Chile and president of Chile's oldest Bitcoin non-profit. Their combined expertise in community building and Bitcoin advocacy drives the project forward.

Activities

BitCoast Festival

The community's flagship event is the BitCoast Festival, an annual three-day gathering held each November in Pichilemu. The festival combines Bitcoin talks and workshops with surfing, yoga, live music, and community bonding. It serves as both a celebration of Bitcoin culture and a practical onboarding event, introducing local merchants and visitors to Lightning payments in a relaxed, festival atmosphere.

Merchant Adoption

Bitcoin Pichilemu works directly with local businesses -- cafes, restaurants, surf shops, and accommodation providers -- to accept Bitcoin payments. The goal is to create a corridor where visitors can spend Bitcoin for everyday needs, from a morning coffee to a surfboard rental.

Significance

Bitcoin Pichilemu demonstrates that Bitcoin adoption does not have to be driven by economic crisis or technical enthusiasm alone. By embedding Bitcoin into an existing cultural identity -- surf culture -- the community makes adoption feel natural and appealing. The BitCoast Festival has become a landmark event in Chile's Bitcoin calendar, and the circular economy model in Pichilemu serves as a proof of concept for similar initiatives in other Chilean towns.
