BTC Isla is a grassroots Bitcoin circular economy project based on Isla Mujeres, a small Caribbean island off the coast of Cancun, Mexico. Founded in 2024, the project has rapidly onboarded over 30 merchants and 130 rental properties to accept Bitcoin payments, making Isla Mujeres one of the most concentrated pockets of Bitcoin commerce in Mexico.
Overview
Co-founded by Isabella Santos, a documentary filmmaker, BTC Isla combines merchant onboarding with community education. The project uses the Mi Primer Bitcoin curriculum to deliver free Bitcoin 101 classes in Spanish, ensuring that adoption is grounded in understanding rather than speculation. The island setting creates a natural closed-loop economy where tourists and locals alike can spend and earn Bitcoin within a compact geographic area.
BTC Isla is part of Cruzada21, the program organized by La Crypta and Veintiuno that provides Bitcoin nodes, point-of-sale terminals, and NFC cards to accelerate circular economy development in Latin American communities.
Activities
The community holds bi-weekly meetups every Wednesday at 10 AM at Mayakita Restaurant, providing a regular touchpoint for locals, expats, and visiting Bitcoiners. Bitcoin 101 classes taught in Spanish help bridge the knowledge gap for merchants and residents new to Bitcoin. The project also raises funds through Geyser Fund to support ongoing education and infrastructure.
With over 30 merchants and 130+ rental properties accepting BTC via the Lightning Network, visitors to Isla Mujeres can increasingly live on Bitcoin during their stay -- paying for accommodation, meals, and activities without converting to pesos.
Significance
BTC Isla is a compelling example of how Bitcoin circular economies can emerge in tourism-driven locations. The island's small size and high tourist traffic create ideal conditions for demonstrating that Bitcoin works as everyday money, not just as a speculative asset. Its rapid growth from founding to 30+ merchants in under a year signals strong organic demand.
