La IslaBTC

Bitcoin community on Cuba's Isle of Youth, born from Cuba Bitcoin, organizing courses and meetups to build a local circular economy.

La IslaBTC is a Bitcoin community based in Nueva Gerona on Cuba's Isla de la Juventud (Isle of Youth). Born from the Cuba Bitcoin community in La Habana, La IslaBTC brings Bitcoin education and circular economy building to Cuba's second-largest island, located roughly 100 kilometers south of the mainland.

Overview

The Isle of Youth is a special municipality of Cuba with approximately 85,000 residents, geographically isolated from the mainland and historically underserved by infrastructure. La IslaBTC emerged when members connected to Cuba Bitcoin saw the need to bring Bitcoin education directly to the island rather than expecting islanders to travel to La Habana. The community focuses on practical, in-person instruction -- recognizing that in Cuba's environment of limited internet access and low smartphone penetration, face-to-face teaching is often the most effective approach.

Activities

La IslaBTC organizes regular in-person Bitcoin courses covering fundamentals, self-custody, and the Lightning Network. These sessions are designed for complete beginners and conducted in small groups to ensure participants can practice setting up wallets, making transactions, and understanding private key management. The community also hosts meetups where existing Bitcoiners share experiences and discuss strategies for using Bitcoin in everyday life on the island.

A key goal is building a local circular economy where residents and small businesses can transact in Bitcoin. Given the Isle of Youth's isolation from Cuba's already limited financial infrastructure, peer-to-peer Bitcoin payments offer a meaningful alternative for value transfer.

Significance

La IslaBTC demonstrates how Bitcoin communities can propagate organically -- Cuba Bitcoin in La Habana inspired a satellite community on a remote island, adapting the mission to local conditions. Operating in one of the most challenging environments for technology adoption anywhere in the world, La IslaBTC proves that the desire for financial sovereignty transcends infrastructure limitations.
