Lago Bitcoin

Non-profit Bitcoin education and circular economy initiative in Guatemala's Lake Atitlan region, combining Lightning Network adoption with environmental cleanup using waste oil for mining.

Lago Bitcoin (Bitcoin Lake) is a non-profit Bitcoin education and circular economy initiative based in Panajachel on the shores of Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. Founded in 2022 by Patrick Melder MD, the project combines Lightning Network merchant adoption with an innovative environmental program that converts waste cooking oil into energy for Bitcoin mining -- helping to clean one of Central America's most polluted lakes.

Overview

Lake Atitlan, once called "the most beautiful lake in the world," has suffered severe pollution from untreated sewage and waste dumped by surrounding communities. Lago Bitcoin addresses this directly by collecting waste cooking oil -- a major pollutant -- from local restaurants and converting it into fuel for generators that power Bitcoin mining rigs. The result is a self-sustaining loop: environmental cleanup generates Bitcoin, which funds further community programs.

The project operates from Panajachel, the main tourism hub on the lake, where approximately 80 merchants now accept Bitcoin via the Lightning Network. Lago Bitcoin is part of Cruzada21, a program organized by La Crypta and Veintiuno that equips Latin American Bitcoin communities with infrastructure.

Activities

Education

Lago Bitcoin runs Bitcoin education programs at Centro Educativo Josue, a local school. Students learn about money, savings, and Bitcoin fundamentals. In a notable program, children earn sats (small fractions of Bitcoin) for participating in community cleanup activities, teaching both financial literacy and environmental responsibility.

Merchant Adoption

The team has onboarded roughly 80 merchants in the Panajachel area to accept Lightning payments, building a functioning circular economy around the lake's tourism industry.

Environmental Mining

The waste cooking oil to Bitcoin mining program is Lago Bitcoin's most distinctive initiative. By diverting oil that would otherwise pollute the lake into productive use, the project demonstrates that Bitcoin mining can be a net positive for the environment when paired with creative energy sourcing.

Significance

Lago Bitcoin is one of the most innovative Bitcoin community projects in Latin America, demonstrating that Bitcoin adoption and environmental conservation can be mutually reinforcing. The project has attracted international attention for its waste-to-mining model and serves as a template for other communities exploring sustainable Bitcoin mining practices.
