Point of Sale

Economics

Also known as: POS, Bitcoin POS

A system used by merchants to accept Bitcoin payments in person, typically generating a Lightning invoice or on-chain payment request displayed as a QR code. Bitcoin POS solutions include BTCPay Server, which allows merchants to accept payments without intermediaries.

Overview

A Bitcoin Point of Sale (POS) system enables merchants to accept bitcoin payments in physical retail environments. Unlike traditional payment processors, Bitcoin POS solutions can operate without intermediaries, allowing merchants to receive payments directly to their own wallet. The Lightning Network has made Bitcoin POS practical by enabling fast, low-fee transactions suitable for everyday purchases.

How Bitcoin POS Works

Payment Flow:

  • BTCPay Server — A self-hosted, open-source payment processor that gives merchants full control over their funds. It supports on-chain and Lightning payments, and no third party ever touches the merchant's bitcoin.
  • Breez POS — A mobile Lightning POS solution built into the Breez wallet, designed for small merchants who want simplicity.
  • CoinOS — A web-based wallet and POS that supports Lightning and on-chain payments with a simple interface.

Advantages Over Traditional Payment Systems

  • No chargebacks — Bitcoin transactions are irreversible once confirmed, eliminating chargeback fraud
  • Lower fees — Lightning transaction fees are typically fractions of a cent, far less than credit card processing fees (2-3%)
  • No intermediaries — With self-hosted solutions, merchants receive payment directly without a payment processor
  • Global accessibility — Any merchant anywhere in the world can accept bitcoin without applying for a merchant account

Lightning and the POS Experience

The Lightning Network has been transformative for Bitcoin POS adoption. On-chain transactions require waiting for confirmations and carry higher fees, making them impractical for small retail purchases. Lightning payments settle in seconds and cost negligible fees, providing a user experience comparable to tapping a credit card.

Growing Adoption

Bitcoin POS adoption is particularly notable in communities building a circular economy, where bitcoin circulates as a medium of exchange. Cities like Bitcoin Beach (El Zonte, El Salvador) and Bitcoin Jungle (Costa Rica) have demonstrated that everyday commerce on Lightning is viable and practical.
