Bitcoin Magazine

Bitcoin publication co-founded by Vitalik Buterin in 2012, covering news and analysis, and organizing the world largest annual Bitcoin conference.

Bitcoin Magazine is one of the oldest and most established publications dedicated to covering Bitcoin. Co-founded in 2012 by Vitalik Buterin (who would later create Ethereum) and Mihai Alisie, the publication has served as a primary source of Bitcoin news, technical analysis, opinion, and culture for over a decade. Originally launched as a print magazine, it evolved into a comprehensive digital media platform and became the organizing force behind the annual Bitcoin Conference, one of the largest Bitcoin events in the world.

History and Founding

Bitcoin Magazine was founded in late 2011 and published its first print issue in May 2012. Vitalik Buterin, then a teenager with a deep interest in Bitcoin and cryptography, co-founded the publication alongside Mihai Alisie. Buterin served as the head writer, producing in-depth technical articles that helped establish the magazine's reputation for substantive coverage of Bitcoin's technology and ecosystem.

The early print magazine was distributed internationally and became one of the first professional media outlets focused exclusively on Bitcoin. Its articles ranged from technical deep-dives into Bitcoin's protocol to coverage of the growing merchant adoption movement and the philosophical implications of decentralized money.

Evolution to Digital Media

As Bitcoin's ecosystem grew, Bitcoin Magazine transitioned from a primarily print publication to a digital-first media platform. The publication expanded its coverage to include daily news, long-form investigative pieces, opinion columns, podcasts, and video content.

In 2014, BTC Inc. acquired Bitcoin Magazine and continued to develop it as the flagship property of a growing Bitcoin media ecosystem. Under BTC Inc., Bitcoin Magazine significantly expanded its reach and became one of the most-visited Bitcoin news websites globally.

The Bitcoin Conference

Bitcoin Magazine became the organizing entity behind the annual Bitcoin Conference (formerly known as Bitcoin 2021, Bitcoin 2022, etc.), which grew into one of the largest cryptocurrency events in the world. The Bitcoin 2024 conference in Nashville, Tennessee drew tens of thousands of attendees and featured prominent speakers including political figures, business leaders, and Bitcoin developers.

Legacy

Bitcoin Magazine holds a unique place in Bitcoin's history as one of the first professional media outlets dedicated to the subject. Its role in educating the public, documenting Bitcoin's development, and organizing major community events has made it a cornerstone institution in the Bitcoin ecosystem.
